Most of us have a few tubes of lipstick sitting at the bottom of our makeup bags, some that we wear often, and some that we never even touch. There’s a reason for that! You may see the “perfect pink lipstick” while scrolling through Pinterest, but that “perfect” shade just doesn’t work for you.
There’s a reason you love it on the model and hate it on yourself. You probably don’t have the same skin tone! So, I want to give you some tips and tricks for finding the right shade and loving every lipstick that you purchase.
1. Know Your Undertone
Everyones skin has an undertone of either yellow or pink. Knowing the color of your undertone can be tremendously helpful when choosing lipstick.
One quick way to identify your undertone is by looking at the veins in your wrist. If they appear blue, then you have a more pink undertone. If they appear green, then you have a more yellow undertone. If they appear to be a more blue-green, then you are one LUCKY woman because that means you have a more neutral skin tone and can wear just about any color!
2. Know Which Shades Work With Your Specific Undertone
To know which undertone matches your skin best, you have to follow these very basic rules. If you have a more pink undertone, then you should stick to lipstick hues that have darker tones in them, such as blue or purple. For a more yellow undertone, stick to warmer colors with pink undertones.
If you are that lucky girl with a neutral skin tone, then you can try a bigger variety of colors. I love when a neutral toned girl wears a bold lip, it just screams confidence!
3. If All Else Fails, Pick Based On Your Actual Skin Tone
Olive Skin Tones
Olive skin tones generally have a more neutral undertone, so it is hard to go wrong with any color here. For the olive tone girl, you can pick from a variety of nudes, pinks, oranges, and reds. Try to determine your color based on your outfit and that will help immensely with deciding on the perfect color.
Fair Skin Tones
Really fair skinned people, look great with a bold bright red lip. A bold lip is a fun way to change up your look and can look fantastic. Try avoiding anything to light because some nude or light pink lipsticks can make you look washed out or sickly. We definitely don’t want that!
Darker Skin Tones
For women with a darker tone, deeper colors look best. Go for a dark plum or dark red. Berry colored lips are also very nice on your skin. These will flatter your skin like no other! Like those with fair skin, you should try to avoid colors that are too light. You don’t want chalky-looking lips to ruin the rest of your fabulous look!
